Voting Information Project

Distribute Official Voting Information at Scale

The Voting Information Project makes it easy for election officials to share accurate, up-to-date election information with millions of voters through the tools and platforms they already use. In partnership with state and local election offices, the project ensures that official voting locations and ballot details reach millions of voters each year.

How it Works

The Voting Information Project was created in 2008 by state and local election officials, The Pew Charitable Trusts, and Google, and has been operated by Democracy Works since 2018. Through the Voting Information Project, Democracy Works partners directly with election officials to collect and process official data about where to vote and what's on the ballot. Our team formats and validates this information, and election offices review and approve it before publication.

Once verified, the data powers the Google Civic Information API, making it available across major search and social platforms. It also supports the Voting Information Tool, a free, embeddable widget that helps organizations share voting guidance directly with their audiences. Leading up to each election, our team monitors for updates and stays in contact with election officials. When an update is entered, it is instantly distributed across the internet wherever the data appears.

Benefits for Election Offices

The Voting Information Project reduces administrative workload and amplifies your office’s reach without added costs or contracts.

Authoritative Data Distribution

Your official election information appears directly in Google Search, Maps, and other trusted platforms automatically.

Comprehensive Infrastructure

A complete, end-to-end solution from data collection and processing to free voter-facing tools and integration. Participation is voluntary, and you maintain full control over your data.

Emergency Response Capability

Real-time updates help voters stay informed when polling places or hours change unexpectedly.

Guided by Election Professionals

To ensure the Voting Information Project meets the real-world needs of election administrators, our team convenes directly with state and local officials through our dedicated VIP Advisory Committees.

These committees serve as strategic stewards of the project, providing feedback and expertise on our data standards and tools. By working together, we ensure that VIP remains a reliable, nonpartisan link between election offices and the voting public.

Our State Advisory Committee is composed of representative states across the country.

For the 2026-2027 term, the committee includes election officials from:

  • California
  • Colorado
  • District of Columbia
  • Indiana
  • Massachusetts
  • Minnesota
  • Rhode Island
  • Texas
  • West Virginia

In instances where the state election office cannot provide all required data, we partner directly with local election offices to participate in VIP. We convene a group of these officials for our Local Advisory Committee, ensuring a ground-level perspective on election administration.

For the 2026-2027 term, the committee includes local election officials from the following states:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Florida
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
