Our Journey
Democracy Works was founded in 2010 with a simple but ambitious goal: to make voting easier for Americans. What began as a small startup has grown into a trusted nonprofit providing the digital infrastructure that powers participation in our democracy.
Our Strategy
We create tools, technology, and data to protect and power our democracy. As America’s electorate continues to evolve, we’re focused on increasing voter participation by building tools that turn occasional voters into lifelong participants, partnering strategically to expand our reach, ensuring reliable election data flows through every platform voters trust, and covering the local races where civic engagement matters most.
We're developing new ways to reach voters and studying how our tools shape participation. From pioneering TurboVote as the first comprehensive voter engagement platform to partnering with A.I. companies like Anthropic and Perplexity, we continuously evolve our approach to meet the evolving needs of voters.
We're building stronger partnerships across sectors to reach more voters and improve civic engagement technology. We work with major platforms like TikTok and Meta to distribute official election data at scale, collaborate with hundreds of organizations that use TurboVote, and support 1,300+ companies through the Civic Alliance.
We build tools that reveal how voters find and act on election information, then use those insights to transform first-time and occasional voters into habitual, lifelong participants in democracy. Our data shows that infrequent voters using TurboVote turn out at rates 24 percentage points higher than their peers nationally. By tracking the full voter journey—from registration checks to sample ballot views to polling place lookups—we identify what support voters need at each stage and deliver it through personalized reminders and guidance.
We ensure accurate, official data reaches voters through every trusted platform. Our Elections API powers voter information across search engines, social media, AI tools, and hundreds of partner websites, while the Voting Information Project serves as the only nationwide aggregator of voting location data. By sourcing directly from election offices and applying rigorous quality assurance, we create the reliable data infrastructure that enables democracy to function in the digital age.
We deliver reliable information for the local races that most directly affect communities. In 2025, we published data for 3,462 elections across all 50 states, covering municipal, school board, county, and other local contests throughout the year. While most civic tech focuses on federal races, we recognize that local elections shape everything from school funding to housing policy, and we're committed to ensuring voters have the guidance they need to participate in every election on their ballot.
