Democracy Works is excited to announce the winners of the third biannual Voting Information Project (VIP) Partner Awards, recognizing the dedication of election offices throughout the 2024 election cycle. State and local election offices play a critical role in our democracy, overseeing the countless moving parts that ensure elections run effectively.

Through the Voting Information Project, Democracy Works partners with 40 state election offices and dozens of local election offices to publish accurate, accessible voting locations, helping millions of voters navigate elections with confidence and combatting the spread of mis-, dis-, and malinformation. Their collaboration with us represents more than just data sharing—it's a partnership in strengthening democratic participation and building voter confidence.

These awards recognize election officials who went above and beyond in sharing accurate data, improving technical systems, and expanding voter access. This year’s honorees include three partners, including our first-ever awardee from a local elections office. We’re grateful for every election office that worked with us to serve voters in 2024.

Michigan Bureau of Elections

For their commitment to working with the Voting Information Project team to make strides in improving their data

As we continue to make updates to the format we use to publish voting information and states make changes to their election laws and practices, it’s vital that we work with partners to improve their data export format and make it easier for voters to find all of the locations at which they can cast their ballots.

In response to Michigan’s new early voting law, the Bureau of Elections worked closely with the Democracy Works team to update their data export format to inform voters when and where they could vote. This included new locations, timelines and procedures for early voting—important changes that required detailed technical coordination.

The Michigan team actively collaborated with our staff to troubleshoot and iterate on their data exports, resulting in a smooth and timely release of accurate early and Election Day voting location data.

“I again say thank you to the whole team at Democracy Works for giving us the opportunity to share Michigan election information through the Voting Information Project. We have been partners with the Voting Information Project for over 14 years now, and we’re anticipating many to come. This couldn’t be possible without your help,” said Stuart Talsma of the Michigan Bureau of Elections.

Maricopa County Elections

For their exceptional partnership with the Voting Information Project for local elections

For the first time, we are awarding a VIP Partner Award specifically for a local election office. As we expand to cover more elections and work with more local election administrators, we want to recognize an exceptional local election partner.

Maricopa County Elections demonstrated exceptional partnership and dedication throughout the 2024 election cycle, earning our inaugural award for a local elections office. Maricopa consistently provides regular updates, promptly answers questions and requests, and maintains active participation in advisory meetings.

The county's technical expertise proved invaluable in expanding our understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications in election administration. Their willingness to share knowledge and insights helped enhance our overall capabilities and understanding of spatial data management in elections.

This combination of technical expertise, collaborative spirit, and data integrity make Maricopa County Elections an outstanding partner whose contributions enhanced the overall success of the 2024 elections.

“Maricopa County values its partnership with the Voting Information Project because it has helped more voters find a convenient voting center or drop box. We are honored to be recognized by VIP for our joint efforts in making voting easy and accessible in order for voters to exercise their fundamental right to vote,” said the Maricopa County Elections team.

Indiana Election Division

For their assistance in providing consistent data updates to VIP leading up to election days

Every election has its surprises, and 2024 was no exception. Whether there is a scheduled change of polling locations or a sudden event that requires an urgent change, we work closely with election officials to keep our data up-to-date leading up to and during election days.

The Indiana Election Division excelled in providing the Democracy Works team with consistent data updates in the lead up to Election Day. They established a regular and automated process to update their data feed, with more frequent exports as election day approaches plus regular monitoring along the way.

In the weeks leading up to the November General Election, and on Election Day, their team kept us apprised of changes to early vote and election day polling places, to ensure the data stayed up-to-date. The Indiana Election Division exemplified how an elections office can work efficiently to ensure voters have access to consistently updated polling location information.

Congratulations again to our 2025 winners! We look forward to our continued partnerships and serving voters by amplifying official election information.
